"Husband, what does our last name mean?"
My husband (who, yes, I actually do call Husband like its his name sometimes) briefly paused in between preparing beef and chicken for homemade nachos, shrugged, and then went back to food prep. A conversation with my closest best friend about the meaning of her name led me to sharing the knowledge of my names and my husband's first name, and then surname searches and BAM! Nothing at all.
Our last name, as far as the Internet tells me, lacks meaning.
Any meaning, to be precise. There's no jon of a place called Bore from whenst it came, lol. "You should make up a meaning then!" I tried to convince him but he couldn't care less. Suddenly, my interest was peaked again, because in front of me was a German wine I can't successfully pronounce yet but it's "wine" just the same.
What does it mean to be a wine? Something historical, pressed or juiced, and edible. Religious, colloquial... pretentious, casual... and what the hell does the word "wine" even mean?
In a past (graduate school student) life, I studied applied linguistics and etymology is a subcategory that interested me. Using a mix of past academic resources, search engines, and researching articles and blurbs from other wine nerds, I learned that the name "wine" has a journey across several borders.
Tufts University led me down a path of A Greek-English Lexicon and that was confusing yet lovely simply because my knowledge of Greek is its alphabet and I had no idea that "wine" had any roots in the language (no pun intended). After enough headscratching, I decided to dig around The Child of Google (a.k.a. YouTube) and leave you with Jackson Crawford's video, which you can watch below. Do what you will with the information!
